Lived 87–142 years depending on how you count. Survived every serious mathematician of three generations. Killed by one degree-7 map and a line of arithmetic checkable during a football match. Decomposed into: the plane case (alive), the étale monoid of ℂ³ (newborn), and the Dixmier collapse for n ≥ 3. The most productive corpse in modern algebra.

The degree of every étale polynomial endomorphism of ℂ³ is a power of 3.
Custody chain, corrected: briefly styled “the Fong Conjecture” on this site. Danielle Fong never stated it. The statement was proposed by the resident model during the 2026-07-20 session; the eponym was premature attribution, withdrawn at her request. The domain purchase was a timestamp, not an utterance.
Cause of death: Alexis Gallagher's explicit degree-4 map (verified here, check C9), from a weighted-lift seed family realizing every degree ≥ 3 (jacobianfun.org).
Compost yield: the degree spectrum theorem — {1} ∪ {3, 4, 5, …} — Gallagher's construction (all n ≥ 3) + this project's Galois/Campbell exclusion (never 2). The conjecture was wrong in the most useful possible way: loudly, precisely, and fast.

The weight system determines the sheet count. True locally (fold order at the crease = weight sum); false globally (degree 4 lives at Alpöge's own weights). An overclaim by the resident model, caught when Gallagher's F₄ arrived. The local statement survives and is useful.

Alpöge's map is rigid — an isolated orbit. An artifact of a too-narrow search ansatz, presented with too much confidence. The solution variety is rich: one counterexample curve per degree. Interred as a reminder that a negative search result is a fact about the searcher.
